U P D A T E : A U G ’ 0 2
I
am writing this just before our first anniversary. The world has
changed substantially since our unforgettable "wedding amongst
the vines". Not quite a month after our wedding my Bama
passed away on September 7th. The following Tuesday was September
11th and with it the feelings of sadness and disbelief over losing
Bama were magnified. That morning I was sitting with my Grandfather,
trying to come to terms with the loss of his soul-mate and the devastating
attack on our country. The heartache that both of those events entailed
for me is difficult to describe. I am very fortunate to have such
a caring and loving spouse to cry with and share our grief together.
Darcy only knew Carolyn for a few years but in that time they formed
a special bond that devastated Darcy when she passed away. My younger
sister Colleen and I had the distinct honor of speaking at the service
for Carolyn, a chance for both us to share our cherished memories
and stories about our Bama.
On September 12th, the already inconsolable Ryan clan
was dealt another blow. My Dad got the news that his Mother Arlene
had a spot on her liver and it was believed to be cancer. Despite
treatment by her doctors, prayers by her family and friends and
a strong will to live, Arlene passed away
on March 8th. Losing Grams was definitely a different experience
than losing Bama. We had six month to prepare and to say good-bye
and I had a different relationship with Arlene. Knowing that both
of my grandmothers are gone is something that saddens me more and
more.
Despite all that has occurred in the previous year,
Darcy and I are moving
forward in our new life together. Darcy's business continues to
grow and my pursuit of a degree in Political Science continues.
We were featured in the local paper for waiting in line for Star
Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The last year has been
a roller-coaster but one that I am glad I paid admission for.
A very special thanks to my parents, Pete and Dottie
and to my in-laws Jim and Jaye for guiding us as newlyweds. Papa,
you have been the face of courage, strength, and humility. Sean
and Colleen, our relationship as
adults is much improved. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to
improve as big brother. James, thanks for accepting me into the
family. Take good care of our niece as she enters kindergarten.
I'd also like to thank those special friends who have
been there for me in
my times of need. Martin, a guy could not ask for a better friend
or best
man, I am glad that life is getting back to normal for Luella and
you.
Matthew, we have been there for each other through rough times and
I will be there for you during your next big quest: fatherhood.
Richard, you may have been Darcy's friend first but you are a great
one to me as well. Tony and Roxy, what can I say, friends like the
two of you don't come around often. Thanks.
